Keeping Cool Under Pressure: Brakco Metallic Fin Pads for Tektro 4-Pot Brakes
For mountain bikers who love steep, sustained descents, brake performance isn't just a matter of preference—it’s a matter of safety. If you are running a Tektro 4-pot hydraulic disc brake system, you already have excellent raw stopping power. However, extreme trail conditions, aggressive riding, and continuous braking generate an immense amount of heat.
When heat builds up faster than your braking system can dissipate it, you experience the dreaded "brake fade," leading to a spongy lever feel and a sudden loss of stopping power. To combat this, upgrading to a specialized cooling solution like Brakco Metallic Fin Brake Pads is one of the smartest enhancements you can make.
The Science of Heat: Why Braking Performance Drops
When your brake pads press against a spinning rotor, kinetic energy is converted into thermal energy. In 4-piston (4-pot) calipers, the larger pad surface area grabs the rotor with immense force. However, that extra friction means more heat generation.
If that heat stays trapped within the caliper body, it transfers directly to your brake fluid. Once the fluid reaches its boiling point, air bubbles form, causing your brake levers to pull all the way to the handlebars without biting.
How Brakco Metallic Fin Pads Solve Brake Fade
Brakco has designed a high-performance solution tailored specifically to address heat management in heavy-duty calipers.
Integrated Aluminum Cooling Fins
The standout feature of these pads is the prominent, black-anodized aluminum cooling fins protruding from the top of the pad backing plate. These fins act as a radiator. As you ride, air flows directly across the massive surface area of the fins, rapidly drawing destructive heat away from the braking surface and out into the atmosphere before it can soak into the caliper.
Sintered Metallic Compound
Brakco pairs this radiator tech with a high-friction metallic compound. Unlike organic (resin) pads that wear down quickly and degrade under extreme temperatures, metallic pads thrive in high heat. They provide:
- Consistent Bite: Reliable friction levels even during long, steep trail descents.
- Wet Weather Performance: Superior braking power in muddy, wet, or humid tropical trail conditions.
- Extended Longevity: Highly durable material that resists rapid wear, saving you maintenance time over a long season.
Compatibility and Setup
These specific finned pads are engineered for a precise drop-in fit with Tektro 4-pot calipers (such as the Orion 4P series).
When installing them, always remember to perform a proper bed-in procedure. Accelerate to a moderate speed and firmly, progressively apply the brakes down to a walking pace around 10–15 times without completely locking the wheels. This transfers a microscopic layer of the metallic material onto the rotor surface, ensuring maximum stopping friction, eliminating brake squeal, and preparing your bike to handle the toughest descents with absolute confidence.
