How to Do Drill Slalom with Cones at the Park
Mountain biking isn’t just about going fast — it’s about learning control.
At Ecocana Sports, our young riders practice simple yet powerful skills like slalom drills with cones. This exercise may look fun (and it is!), but it teaches key fundamentals that make every ride smoother and safer.
1. What is a Slalom Drill?
A slalom drill is when riders weave between cones placed in a straight line, practicing turns on both sides.
It helps riders:
-Develop balance and steering precision
-Learn to shift body weight smoothly during corners
-Improve bike-body coordination and rhythm
Even advanced riders still use cone drills to sharpen their cornering technique!
2. Setting Up Your Slalom Practice
You don’t need a fancy trail — a quiet park or open space works perfectly.
Here’s how to set it up:
-Place cones (or small markers) about 2–3 meters apart.
-Start slowly and focus on smooth turns.
-Keep your eyes up — look to the next cone, not the one you’re at.
-Gradually increase your speed once you’re confident.
This simple setup trains your reflexes and helps you handle tight trails with ease.
3. Technique Tips for Young Riders
-Stay low and balanced: Bend your knees and elbows for stability.
-Lean the bike, not your body: Drop the bike side to side while keeping your torso upright.
-Keep light hands, strong legs: Let your lower body guide the bike through turns.
-Look where you want to go: Always focus ahead — your bike follows your eyes!
4. Why Slalom Drills Matter
Practicing with cones builds the foundation for real-world riding.
It helps riders feel how their bikes react in corners — improving control, confidence, and speed when they hit the trails.
